Teach students about Georgia O’Keeffe while introducing them to color gradient scales. Markers aren’t just for making posters. Children will learn to add color to make their up close flowers by starting with the lightest color and proceeding to the darkest, adding color layer by layer. Vocabulary: highlights, shading, color gradient scales, outline, overlapping, contrast, warm colors, cool colors, color families, and neutral colors.

You can explore design and the art elements with your aspiring artist with my Norman Rockwell lesson. Not to mention introduce them to a beloved American artist and illustrator. This lesson focuses on the use of art to convey message or meaning.  Using the Golden Rule by Rockwell as it’s inspiration, it can be adapted for any artist you are studying and any “story” you want to tell. It is particularly suited for middle school but I have written a free supplement that explains how to explore the art elements with even the youngest artist.

Creativity is invention! Enjoy a few more art lesson favorites.

In my Leonardo da Vinci lesson, students explored invention. Leonardo da Vinci was a master inventor as well as an artist. It takes invention to make inkblots into art. They are really just blotches and splats of ink on paper, nothing more. But it is that something special that God created in us that fills in the gaps and that’s why we imagine something out of it. Inkblot art takes that a step further by turning them into art!
