Learning about the tide pool through the eyes of a hermit crab can be a lot of fun. Mechanical Man and I loved doing this. We even went to the pet store and purchased our very own hermit crab, whom he lovingly named “Sir Phineas Aquarius” or Fin for short. He was surprisingly easy to care for and has already molted once and changed shells.

 

Through the eyes of Pagoo by Holling Clancy Holling we learned all about the life of a hermit crab. The book covers an intricate study of tide pool life which Pagoo encounters throughout the stages of his life. It had wonderful drawings and illustrations with explanations of the animal life and their behaviors. John even got into doing some of his own sketches.

It was a great study and provides a good break from text books/workbook type study. The book is also very adaptable in that you can do as much or as little as desired as far as and developing your own unit study for it goes.

Some possible ideas to compliment the unit are sketching for art, content for science, tide pool locations for geography, spelling lists, number games relating to tide pool information, the book provides literature and vocabulary, reading comprehension questions, dictations, and the list goes on.
