Before writing a compare and contrast essay have your child use my  Wizard of Oz Venn Diagram to organize the similarities and differences between Oz and Kansas. In the portions of the circles which do not overlap write those things that are particular and unique to each on the designated side. In other words, “gray” might be placed on the Kansas side while “colorful” is listed for the Oz side. Use the whole  story when compiling the list and not just the first few chapters as the subject comes up all through the book. Next have your child list in the parts of the circle which overlap the things that are common or similar in both places. For example, “people care about Dorthy” may be listed as a similarity.

Write a Kansas and Oz Compare and Contrast Essay.

Now that your child knows what is similar and different between Oz and Kansas he can write a compare and contrast essay. Mapping out exactly what he wants to say is very helpful to the writing process. Your child may only want to mention a few of the most significant finding or a specific topic to highlight from what ideas they have gathered. Having too broad of a topic can make any writing composition seem like rambling. To help your child write their compare and contrast essay have them use this Wizard of Oz Compare and Contrast Essay Organizer to organize their paper.

Once they have their thoughts organized they can begin writing their paper. I’d love to read some of these from the children’s perspectives!
