Tomatoes, Peppers and Cucumbers are family favorites.
I wanted to choose a few summer vegetables everyone loves and enjoys from a summer garden and focus on them a little today. My favorites that we will use the most are tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.
Tomatoes:
My friends and I chose to start seeds indoors for 5 different kinds of tomatoes! This is probably too many tomatoes but since there are four families and we may loose a few along the way it seems appropriate. A few plants will be raised at each house…not all of them here. If all the tomatoes make it then we will have lots to share. But I have a feeling that because there is so much wind in Kansas, we may loose some while they are still young. So I am already thinking of protecting them with some kind breathable cover that will also let the light in. I am planning to grow the typical type along my fence line. My two 4 x 8 ft. boxes are filling quickly for 4 families so I decided that it will be best to turn over some ground and add my soil mix for sake of space. Some of the smaller varieties can go into our boxes and even some large containers on my patio. As long a there is 6-8 full hours of sun I think it will work fine to grow them just about anywhere.
Here are the 5 types we have:
Rutgers
Roma VF
Cherokee Purple
Red Cherry
Yellow Pear
Our tomatoes won’t go outside till it warms up for good. This will give them almost a month to get bigger and stronger too!
Cucumbers:
Cucumbers I have less experience with so I hope to learn much from this year. I know they need support so ideally our plan is to grow them vertically. We will have to build a structure for that. These can’t get put outside either until after all chance of frost as well. I chose cucumbers to highlight because they make such great snacks and are wonderful in salads. So I know they will get used up. I am getting excited just thinking of the cucumber salad! Unlike the tomatoes and peppers our cucumbers will be started outside next month. They will have to go on an outer square in my square foot garden, so that we can build something for them to grow on and they need to be placed where, when large, they won’t shade the other plants.
Peppers:
Peppers and onions just make everything taste so good! So they are a staple for my kitchen also. One of my main objectives for my garden is to supplement my kitchen food supply with herbs and vegetables. Peppers are a perfect choice. They too will not be planted outdoors until late May.
